Vista Housing Innovation Pilot Program
The City of Vista is partnering with Townspeople to help individuals experiencing homelessness find more affordable housing than standard studio or one-bedroom apartments. The collaboration, called the Vista Housing Innovation Pilot Program (VHIPP), is part of a larger countywide initiative called The San Diego Shared Housing Collaborative.
The San Diego Shared Housing Collaborative was established in recognition of the urgent and pressing need to maximize the use of existing housing stock amidst San Diego’s housing crisis, which is further exacerbated by increasing rates of homelessness. In a region where the rental market is primarily comprised of multi-bedroom units, often unaffordable for many and characterized by high costs and low vacancy rates, there’s a pressing need to leverage every available resource effectively. Understanding the urgent need for innovative solutions, we’ve forged a collaborative initiative aimed at connecting individuals seeking housing with compatible housemates and property owners interested in shared living arrangements. By harnessing the power of shared housing, we maximize the utilization of existing housing resources, providing affordable and sustainable housing options to those in need. This shared housing model involves individual choice in who you might be sharing a unit with and also provides an individual lease for each room in the unit, thereby preventing the burden of assuming rent for another individual if they miss a month’s rent or if that individual decides to leave the unit altogether.
By enrolling in VHIPP, you will not only get access to the Shared Housing Portal, a website designed to match you with other individuals who have similar likes and dislikes when it comes to housing arrangements, but also housing navigation, housing stability support, and, for those who might have low income, recent evictions, or poor credit, units that are master leased by Townspeople. These master-leased units will have the ability to provide a lower threshold of requirements to be eligible for renting a regular market-rate unit.
